As I picked up Shush and Al from preschool today I announced that Cole was coming over to play with us for a little bit so his mom could run some errands. I overheard them having the most interesting conversation in the back seat of the minivan.
Shush announces that she is going to hold “Her Baby Cole first!” (Cole is 15 months old and does not think he is a baby)
Al informs her that “Cole is not a baby! He is a little boy now!”
Shush responds “I don’t care. I’m going to hold him and hug him and one day when he isn’t MY baby anymore I will marry him!”
I can see that Al is getting frustrated. His forehead is getting all furrowed, and he is pursing his lips. He firmly stated that “You will not marry him!”
Shush, I don’t know if she doesn’t care that Al is getting upset, or if she doesn’t notice. She asks Al “And why not?”
Al, still upset, retorts “Because I’m going to marry you! That’s why!”
This is where I jump in. I don’t know what is going to fly out of Shush’s mouth. I don’t want poor Al anymore upset than he already is. So I break the tension the best way I know how and ask if they want mac’n cheese or nuggets for lunch. Crisis averted! Lunch dilemma solved!
