Ukraine – Fighting continues and EU/US sanctions on Russia increase. Kiev’s security forces have launched their biggest effort yet to dislodge the pro-Russian militants who have overrun the south and east of the country, reportedly seizing buildings in dozens of towns and cities (CNN). There is worry Russia will dispute the validity of the Presidential election planned for May 25th. (Ukraine Facts)
Russia – by all accounts Putin wants to revive the USSR (The Week).
Iraq – (Iraq Facts) Millions of Iraqis (60% turnout) voted for a new Parliament on Wednesday in the first nationwide vote since American troops left over two years ago (New York Times).
Iran – Nuclear talks continue, and some progress has been made approaching the 20 June deadline for an agreement.
India – Nearly 815 million people are eligible to vote in the largest election on the planet. The staggered election started on 7 April and will end with vote-counting on 16 May (John Oliver… brilliant) (Reuters).

Israel & Palestine – Israel suspended participation in the peace talks for the kajillionth time in response to news that the Palestinian Authority’s Fatah had for a third time concluded a unity agreement with the Hamas leadership of Gaza (Foreign Policy Journal).
Nigeria -More than 300 girls were abducted. Of that number, 276 remain in captivity and 53 escaped. Tuesday, an additional eight girls were abducted from a village near a terrorist stronghold in the area.The schoolgirls have been held for three weeks by the Muslim terrorist organization Boko Haram, which has killed thousands of Christians and Muslims in an attempt to bring strict Islamic law to all of Nigeria. It declared plans to sell the girls or have them married to its members. (USA Today)
