It’s been a slow, cold morning with the 8 inches or so of snow from last-night. The government is shut-down again so I’m at home with Mr. C. We are having a great time d finding things around the house that are not TV to keep us entertained. Valentines cards are a convenient to-do, of course. With the ease of finding kid-appropriate shows and movies on the multiple electronic media devices in my home, I have to admit it is so tempting to just buy a new movie whenever we are stuck inside like this. Here’s how I talk myself out of it.
As I was contemplating spending $3.99 to rent ‘Planes’ the other day, my son grabbed the tape dispenser out of my drawer and started unravelling it. My first instinct was to take it away but I stopped myself and thought, “how much does a roll of tape cost?” Answer: less than a movie! So I figured if that can keep him entertained for an hour, too, why not let him go to town? Since then I have found a lot of other things he is dying to get into because they are Mom’s things that I would rather “waste” than his brain cells:
- shredded paper
- a whole roll of toilet paper, paper towels, box of kleenex
- baking ingredients
- ball of yarn, twine, or string
- roll of any kind of tape
- paper bags

I like to break out the bag of socks that are missing their mates. I let the girls draw some eyes and mouth with a marker and they play puppet show for an hour. Plus easy clean up. Just toss them out. I was going to any way.
